Who We Are

Bet Tzedek provides free legal services to low income individuals living in Los Angeles County. Services include elder abuse prevention and intervention; advance healthcare directives, wills, powers of attorney, and conservatorship; decedents’ estates and probate; assistance with Social Security overpayment notices, denials, and appeals; public benefits advocacy for Medi-Cal, In-Home Supportive Services, and Veterans Benefits; Holocaust survivor reparations claims and appeals; a Low-Income Tax Initiative (LITI) for households facing liens, garnishments, and other tax controversies; legal issues impacting small businesses; employment law issues including wage theft, and safe working conditions; eviction defense and appeals, resolving landlord tenant disputes, securing safe living conditions, negotiating soft landings, stopping or delaying foreclosures, protecting homeowners from deceptive loans and consumer scams, and preventing real estate fraud; guardianship; Special Immigrant Juvenile Status; and assistance with housing, employment, and health care access for members of the transgender community.

Description of Services

Bet Tzedek provides legal assistance through community education and outreach, advice
and counsel, direct legal representation, self-help clinics and publications, impact litigation,
and policy advocacy. Our project areas include:

JUSTICE FOR SENIORS, CAREGIVERS & DEPENDENT ADULTS: Bet Tzedek has unmatched
expertise in the legal issues that affect older adults, adults with intellectual and
developmental disabilities, and their caregivers, helping them age in safety and security.
Services include elder abuse prevention and intervention, public benefits assistance,
advance planning, Holocaust reparations, conservatorship, guardianships, and caregiver
legal assistance.

ECONOMIC JUSTICE FOR WORKERS & SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS: Helping to lift low-
income communities out of poverty, Bet Tzedek fights for fair wages, safe working
conditions, taxpayer relief, and equitable economic opportunities. Services include
employment rights, wage theft, unemployment insurance, low-income taxpayer assistance,
and small business development.

HOUSING JUSTICE FOR TENANTS, HOMEOWNERS & THE UNHOUSED: Bet Tzedek has
protected and preserved housing for underserved Angelenos since our founding. Services
include eviction defense, tenant rights, habitability, foreclosure prevention, real estate
fraud, reversing title theft, and addressing predatory lending.

JUSTICE FOR CHILDREN & FAMILIES: Nontraditional families face myriad challenges in
accessing food, housing, and medical care, and Bet Tzedek removes legal barriers to ensure
their complex needs are met. Services include guardianship for children in nonparental
care, immigration relief for undocumented minors and foster youth, holistic medical-legal
care at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and transgender rights.
