Voluntary Legal Services Program of Northern California
VLSP is a nonprofit agency that provides free civil legal assistance to low-income people in Sacramento and surrounding counties. It is able to provide free help because it receives several grants to help the poor with legal matters and because attorneys and other legal professionals donate their services - they work pro bono. There are over 700 VLSP volunteers, including translators for non-English speaking clients. In addition to the volunteers, VLSP has a small administrative staff as well as staff attorneys and paralegals who oversee the advice clinics. The advice clinics are self-help clinics: the volunteers teach you how to resolve your legal problems and help fill out legal forms. |
